Rock Band 2 means release the inner musician
July 16, 2008 at 6:14 pm | In Game Preview, Show impressions | Leave a CommentI just returned from the Rock Band 2 demo from MTV games and I have to tell you it is truly the game that unites casual gamers and hardcore rockers. Rock band the initial game was a new innovation released for gamers to show off their skills and play with people online. Rock band 2 is now a game that Harmonix intends to improve upon based on the people that count; the fans. You have been ranting and they have been listening.
First off, we will go through the hardware. That has been a main concern for the gamers… having to mod or get a new set is lame.. Don’t worry you wont have to “figure it out” anymore. Harmonix and some third party companies are releasing some new hardware such as:
Madcatz releasing a custom base with improved strum bar and buttons. The device is wireless and autocalibrates with an electronic photosensitive eye and mic. No more countless hours of recalibrating. The drum sets come in different flavors and are more sensitive. There is the new drum kit with expansion ports so you can plug in the new cymbal expansion coming out. You also have the ability to plug in drum machines or electronic pads if you need a more realistic feel. There is also a drum kit from Ion, a subsidiary of Alesis (makers of fine keyboards and other musical equipment) which is full size real electronic drum kit. Retailing for $299, this device will make even the beginning student feel like a rockstar.
There is also a new controler with a mic built in so you don’t thrash your rock band mic when you have to hit it for the tambourine or cowbell parts.
But what about the actual game you ask? Well besides a countless song list that you can see in an earlier post, you have masters. No more covers. There is also more variety. So there is pop (GO GO’s) and Rap (Whatya Want by the Beasties) and good old rock (AC DC). This is not the only features they have added. Better selection searches, the ability to create better set lists, daily online challenges, a real honest battle of the bands mode (you compete locally and then you go big time), are just some of the things they offer. Later on this week we will have an interview with the devs to get some of your questions answered.
I am really excited about this game and can’t wait. I might even throw a TME rockband event in San Diego. Either way you must get this game.
Ubisoft Gives Us More…
July 16, 2008 at 6:01 pm | In Industry News, Show impressions | Leave a Commentby Lauri Hong
This company, as you know, really keeps the entertainment coming along. With their current lineup of what’s to soon come out, believe me it’ll be worth the wait. Finally a company not afraid to show us their goods without holding back. And if they’re still holding back then all the better… meaning that there’s more to come of all this goodness.
We, of course, continually see a constant growth in the population of gamers non-stop. Along with the growing trend, Ubisoft conforms to what will try to suit the gamers’ constant need. So what am i rambling along here for? Well, according to these guys who are so well known especially for their constant shooters such as all Tom Clancy games (I’ll get back to this in a moment), they’ve, like many others, finally have come to a realization.
Girls that game! Wow, imagine that… such an innovative idea! And yes, I say this with total sarcasm seeing that I started playing video games when I was… ehhh… lets just say that I started with Pong. So anyways, getting back to Ubisoft, and the many other guys I was sitting in the same room with , applauding the great ideas of girls that actually game, they have focused their attentions on two specific titles that have constantly been popular. Those two are Imagine and Petz. Girls will actually be allowed to ‘imagine’ that they could be a fashion designer, interior designer, possibly a wedding designer, a rock star, maybe be in the movies, or even a teacher! Huh, and here I thought we were in the 21st century. Aside from all those oh so glamorous possibilities, Ubisoft has also created a way that many can take care of their ‘Petz’ in a new way. In these upcoming games, people will be able to cross breed and create their own cute and cuddly little family of creatures with dogs, cats horses and even monkeys.
Yes I guess monkeys are somehow in high demand for pets… *raises an eyebrow*. To push the limit even further, Ubisoft has partnered up with Common Wealth to create a plushie that goes right along with Petz. Upon the box should be a code to unlock that certain pet within the game. Talk about taking every opportunity to cover all corners. Oh yes, one other thing that Ubisoft has so graciously given to the growing population of girl gamers are sports. Don’t worry, it’s nothing that would be so violent as wrestling. They had announced that these sports “Ener-G” will be gym rocket… in other words gymnastics, adventure riders… players that want to try their hand at riding a horse, and of course what every girl wants… a dance squad. Need I say more?
Enough talking about the girl games that I know will go flying off the shelves during the holiday season. So right about now, you’re probably thinking… well what’s in it for the rest of us?! Not to worry… like in the Nintendo press conference, they have shown us their handy work at the new and ever so comical Rayman. Along with that, of course, the new snowboarding game that they and Shaun White have worked closely on together. And as I have stated before, dust off that balance board since you’ll make good use of it with these two games.
Of course Ubisoft can’t skip a beat without its continually popular shooters. This time around they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Tom Clancy series. Tom clancy’s End War will be their first attempt to play a game that is strictly controlled entirely by voice command. Hmmmm, I can already see an issue with this especially if you have a LAN party. Of course let’s not forget the long awaited Far Cry 2. In this version, they have decided to try to re-invent the shooter game and attempt to focus more on stealth. Not only that, but this will be a new and open world to gamers where they can play how ever they feel like. Nothing to lead them in a straight pattern or line, thank god. FREEDOM!
Remember that wonderful entertaining game Prince of Persia? Ubisoft is finally releasing a second one using the Assassin’s Creed engine this holiday season. With a new engine, of course, comes new gameplay. In doing so, the story will evolve differently for each player depending upon the paths you take within game. With an illustrative unique look to the game, who could ask for anything more? New dynamics to the flow of the game, a new prince, wow… everything’s just soooo…. new? Like many other Ubisoft games, I’m sure that this baby will be flying off the shelves before it even gets to it.
Finally, and lastly, Ubisoft has presented us with just a morsel of thought… a new brand? Hmmmm amBX… I am Alive!
An Hommage To David Hayter

What’s up with Capcom? Yeah, okay so we understand that they thought SquareEnix’s idea of turning their legendary tale of Final Fantasy into a wonderous movie was great. After all, an epic tale of Lost Planet? ofIngenious! Words can honestly not describe how disappointed I felt in attending the half hour conference of listening to continual praises David Hayter. I believe the general public knows how talented he aleady is. Don’t worry, I think we got the idea.
Sure, I know trying to talk about the Lost Planet movie is important, however, I honestly felt that the time we spent within that room could have been better spent. However, I will still keep my hopes up in hearing what they will hopefully have to reveal during the San Diego Comic Con. *Cough* Street Fighter *Cough*
Tomb Raider: Underworld
July 16, 2008 at 2:47 pm | In Game Preview, Show impressions | Leave a CommentTags: Lara Croft, Tomb Raider Underworld
Lara Croft has been in the history of gaming since I was a wee lass. She was an icon than men drooled over and women looked up to. These days Lara has a new look to her… a realistic look. The game of Tomb Raider has become more sophisticated as you can see below.
Lara’s movements have been motion captured for this game to give a more realistic movement. The environment around Laura is fluid and fully interactive based on real world physics. (i.e. 9mm bullets don’t go very far in water but a spear from a spear gun will). The video doesn’t seem to do the game much justice but i can guarantee you that this game seems much better than the previous one. There are rewards for fans who are die hard followers of the series. Questions will be finally anwered for them. However the game does not require you to play the previous ones so you won’t be left out. As for the beasties and the puzzles, well lets just say her opponents don’t just sit there and poke or bite. They have a bit more style and movement that will make it more difficult to beat and the camera will still assist you as a compass but will allow more views to figure out puzzles. All in all this one is worth a look when it comes out.
ROAD TRIP!
July 15, 2008 at 7:05 pm | In personal experiences | Leave a CommentSo, Nintendo graciously allowed a shuttle service from their press conference at the Kodak Theatre in smack dab in the middle of Hollywood to the wonderful scene of the LA Convention Center. And silly me thinking that I would be encumbered with too many things in my bag and in my hands, I forgot to bring the one thing that I always drag along with me… a jacket. So sitting in the freezing cold of the Kodak Theatre allowed me to shiver off some calories while attending to the Nintendo press conference. Thinking that once it was finished, I would be happily on my way to a semi-warmer climate within the sorta empty halls of the LACC. Silly me! The bus ride over to the convention proved to be jampacked with other media members alike mumbling to each other of their own thoughts… which I will gladly not bore you with since it basically put me to sleep. Upon arriving at the convention center, our team was greeted with the wonder sight of a guy in the front of us with his pants falling off his butt while trying to get out of his seat. Talk a bout something that we didn’t expect… but then again there are many things that always happen to us that we never expect. So now that we’ve finally arrived to our destination, I am glad to say that I am still hitting my head against the wall because I’m still freezing in this media room. Well, at least once I get up and running around to my appointments I won’t be dropping dead from heat exhaustion?
